About BFID
Construction of the Big Flat Irrigation District began in 1945 and was completed in 1949. The purpose is to serve the Missoula rural area known as the "Big Flat". 70 years on we now serve an "urban/ rural" customer base. The ditch itself consists of a main canal 9.3 miles long along with 2 miles of laterals. Heading out in the Bitterroot river near Highway 93 it empties into the Clark Fork river below the Kona bridge. As of 2023 there are 156 members. Water rights were assigned to properties when the District was created and as subdivisions have occurred over time new owners are assigned a pro-rata share of the original water right associated with their current properties. Some users have fractional rights while others have multiple rights. The district services 850 acres.
